SANDRA STANIONYTE

“Carries both strength and depth. Stripping back the very surfaces of the outsides to stand strong and then quietly to confront others with shared fears and failures.

She empowers material zeitgeists as carriers that mess up and disturbs the body’s sanctity. Using her body as both site and instrument, a meeting ground of action and the material.

The exposed body, in turn, becomes hanger to the clothes that would have protected it. Re-appropriating function and exposing the clean by dirty materiality.

Drawing and painting in live body alchemy.”

Nigel Rolfe, 2017

The self-position in the nowadays world. Self/image or reflection on the situation one-self is in. I am interested in exploring and raising questions: what is the environment we live in? Where today the ‘one-self’ stands for?

‘With the birth of new technologies and these new economic processes, one sees the birth of a sort of thinking about space that is no longer modeled on the police state of the urbanization of the territory but that extends far beyond the limits of urbanism and architecture.

{N}o matter how terrifying a given system may be, there always remain the possibilities of resistance, disobedience, and oppositional groupings…

Nothing is fundamental. That is what is interesting in the analysis of society{and social spaces}… There are only reciprocal relations, and the perpetual gaps between intentions in relation to one another.’
(Michel Foucault 1984)

The ‘Image of Self’ in different social and political environments. I am interested in situations, political or social formed models/ circumstances/ projections that influences daily life. And by being the presence in the space, create a set of actions that reflex on both, the Self of others and the Self of my own.

The self-position in the nowadays world. Self/image or reflection on the situation one-self is in. I am interested in exploring and raising questions: what is our connection with space, the environment we live in? What happens when you lose the permanent place to live when you start traveling around the globe and your body becomes as a kind of transitional object? The Inner-self carries the memories of who the ‘I’ is but in the moment of ‘here and now’ the ‘I’ always receives new/different information, an experience that it changes previously formed perception and makes us look at ourselves from new perspectives. As Helena Cixous in Coming to Writing and Other Essays claims : “And so when you have lost everything, no more roads, no direction, no fixed signs, no ground, no thoughts able to resist other thoughts, when you are lost, beside yourself, and you continue getting lost, when you become the panicky movement of getting lost, then, that’s when, where you are unwoven weft, flesh that lets strangeness come through, defenseless being, without resistance, without batten, without skin, inundated with otherness, it’s in these breathless times that writings traverse you, songs of an unheard-of purity flow through you, addressed to no one, they well up, surge forth, from the throats of your unknown inhabitants, these are the cries that death and life hurl in their combat.” Person who loses the place and the truth of knowing becomes open to the entire world and also, at the same time – the most fragile creature. Where are the limits? are there any limits?

Baudrillard proposes that postmodernism is defined by the loss of the referend and also includes the loss of the body as such. Amelia Jones here would argue that the idea of the body as a referent among others is continuous with the modernist logic of differential signification: ‘‘[…] contemporary Self/Image will take up the concept of our experience of the world as a representational one and of the body/ self as itself representational (for example, the understanding of the body in psychoanalysis as a locus of visible or verbalized symptoms through which the conscious and unconscious self is enacted) to point to its limits.” Over one hundred years ago Bergson presciently acknowledged that imagistic models of human experience and embodiment are never enough. Again, the tendency of the body when rendered representationally through technologies of visual imaging, stored as visual data, which makes their transmission and manipulation even easier – computer representation, the image of ‘other’ merged into one self’s is the replica of the unconscious will – Not Enough (what is out of interest to me here, and rather opposite – the realization of your own presence in the world of data, reveals the loss of it and therefore helps to enhance the moment of real)

‘‘Our bodies are lived and make meaning in ways that include but far exceed the particular sense and image-making capacities of vision”. Martin Heidegger, The Age of the World Picture
